Why We Exist
Akaalo Initiative Ltd is a nonprofit social enterprise based in Uganda, working with marginalised youth to deliver digital literacy, vocational training, and employment pathways. We combine low-cost offline technology with locally anchored facilitation to deliver measurable learning outcomes.
Too many young people in rural and peri-urban Uganda leave school without the digital skills, confidence, or networks needed to access meaningful work. Traditional education systems struggle with overcrowded classrooms, limited resources, and teacher burnout. Technology alone isn't the answer — but affordable, contextualised, teacher-supporting technology can be transformational.
We work at the intersection of innovation and inclusion, proving that world-class learning tools can reach the students who need them most. Our model is built for scale: replicable hubs, offline-first infrastructure, and a commitment to rigorous monitoring and evaluation.

Learning with Nambi
Nambi is our custom-built AI learning companion — an offline, curriculum-aligned tutor that delivers guided lessons, patient explanations, and practice opportunities to students in under-resourced schools. Designed to support teachers rather than replace them, Nambi reduces workload whilst improving student outcomes.
Guided Lessons
Short, scaffolded, curriculum-aligned modules that break complex topics into manageable steps. Each lesson adapts to student pace and provides instant feedback.
  • Breaks problems into 3 easy steps
  • Aligns with Ugandan Curriculum
  • Self-paced with mastery checkpoints
Adaptive Assistance
Context-aware hints and scaffolding that reduce teacher load whilst maintaining high academic standards. Nambi knows when to prompt, when to wait, and when to celebrate progress.
  • Provides hints without giving answers
  • Identifies misconceptions early
  • Frees teachers to work 1-on-1
Offline First
Runs without internet connectivity, syncing progress when devices return to hub. Built for the realities of rural Uganda: inconsistent power, limited bandwidth, and shared devices.
  • No internet required for learning
  • Battery-efficient design
  • Syncs weekly at hub base
Programmes: Training & Employment Pathways
We don't just teach digital skills — we build pathways to economic opportunity. Our integrated model spans foundational literacy through to vocational training and job placement, ensuring students have the tools and confidence to succeed.
Digital Literacy in Schools
Foundation programme for primary and secondary students. Covers basic computing, internet safety, productivity tools, and critical thinking skills. Delivered through rotating hub model with certified facilitators.
Vocational Training Partnership
Collaboration with Mirembe Vocational Training Centre and others. Offers pathways in tailoring, mechanics, construction, hospitality, and agriculture — enhanced with digital skills and entrepreneurship modules.
Job Placement & Mentorship
Connects graduates with employers, provides CV support, interview coaching, and ongoing mentorship. 85% of vocational graduates secure employment or further training within 6 months.

For Teachers: Professional Development
We invest in teacher capacity through free training, certification, and ongoing support. Our Teacher Dashboard provides real-time insights into student progress, common challenges, and recommended interventions.
Teacher Certificate Programme: 20-hour blended learning course covering facilitation techniques, adaptive pedagogy, classroom management with technology, and Nambi integration. Fully accredited and recognised by district education offices.
How It Works: The Hub System
Our rotating hub model maximises impact whilst minimising cost. Each hub serves 3 schools on a weekly rotation, providing every student with consistent access to technology and facilitation without requiring permanent infrastructure at each location.
Hub Base
Central charging, maintenance, and data sync point
Weekly Rotation
Devices transported to School A (Week 1), School B (Week 2), School C (Week 3)
Local Facilitator
Trained community member delivers sessions and supports teachers
Monitoring & Evaluation
Progress tracked, data synced, adjustments made
What's in a Hub?
Hardware
  • 20–35 tablets (rugged, 10" screens)
  • Local server for offline content
  • Battery backup system
  • Secure transport cases
Logistics
  • Motorcycle or vehicle for transport
  • Weekly rotation schedule
  • Maintenance protocols
  • Insurance and security
People
  • 1 lead facilitator per hub
  • Hub coordinator (oversees 3 hubs)
  • Teacher liaisons at each school
  • M&E officer for data collection
Evidence & Learning
We are committed to rigorous monitoring, evaluation, and learning. Every programme is designed with clear outcomes, baseline assessments, and regular data collection. We publish our findings openly and adapt our approach based on evidence.
Baseline vs Endline Assessments
Custom digital literacy assessments administered at programme start and completion. Pilot cohort showed 68% improvement in foundational digital skills and 54% improvement in problem-solving confidence.
Teacher Feedback Loops
Monthly structured interviews and quarterly focus groups with participating teachers. Insights drive product improvements and training refinements.
Student Progress Tracking
Nambi logs every interaction, providing granular data on learning patterns, common misconceptions, and time-on-task. Analytics dashboard available to teachers and programme managers.
Third-Party Evaluation
Independent evaluators conduct annual reviews. 2025 report highlighted strong engagement rates (92% session attendance) and positive sentiment from students, teachers, and parents.
All evaluation data is anonymised and stored in compliance with GDPR and Ugandan data protection regulations. For questions about our M&E approach, contact research@akaalo.com
